Exped MegaMat 10 LXW Self Inflating Camp Mat

Theres no specific option recommended for these mats, they will work with most single stretchers with the deciding factor being budget, features and overall stretcher height.  It may also be worth considering the weight of the stretcher for carting around and pack up, and some can be very heavy.

The floor space of the main tent in the RX5 in 260cm x 260cm.
One of the Megamat 10LXW is 197cm x 77cm, so two mats would totaly 197cm x 154cm, leaving you with plenty of room.

Air expands when hot, and contracts when cold, which is a matter of science & can't be avoided, but admittedly I've not heard of it affecting self-inflating mats before - especially to the point where they "deflate"
I imagine if that was the case, that you pump your mat up to the required pressure, and if its cold weather you'd give it abit more air to offset any loss of firmness.

There's no Exped mat that we carry that's 100cm sorry!

The best options would be the Darche Supreme Snoozer in either the 110cm wide or the 90cm wide versions.

If it's just small holes then Gear Air Seam Sealer is an awesome option.
If you are needing to repair larger tears, using the Seam Sealer with some nylon ripstop fabric that you can score from a local fabric store, should do the trick.
Locating holes in a mattress can be a bit tricky - you can use the soapy spray bottle trick, or even submerge in a bathtub of water.  Neither of these options will damage your mat.

The Exped mats don't have a tested weight limit but they can take a lot of weight so a heavier person shouldn't have any trouble using the mat. Taking some air out of the mat can make it a bit more comfortable too.

Exped mattresses are fully bonded, meaning the outer mattress material is adhered to the top and bottom of the mattress foam core.
The side wall of self-inflating mattress won't ever be bonded, as the mat needs to fully compress flat to roll up - if the side wall was glued to the foam, this couldn't happen and the material would likely tear away.
The side wall bulging slightly when fully inflated is normal, as demonstrated in the product pictures, and should not have any impact on comfort.

The Exped Mat Cover LW wouldn't fit this mat as it isn't wide enough and wouldn't be able to zip up. The Exped Mat Cover LW is designed to fit the LW-sized smaller hiking mats in their range. The Exped Organic Cotton Mat Cover LXW is designed to fit this mattress as a cover, although isn't a complete bag for the mat.

You could use something like a separately available Mattress Bag or Quilt/Doona Cover to cover this up completely if you are wanting to store this away inflated. It doesn't look like there is a specific storage bag for this mat currently available to store this inflated.

We don't recommend keeping/storing your MegaMat inside a Rooftop Tent as it would risk damaging the mattress. Best to roll up the mattress in its own bag each time the RTT is packed away. There are Rooftop tent specific mats such as the Darche Roof Top Tent Mattress RTM 1400 that are designed to be packed away with the Rooftop tent.

The Darche 1100 All Terrain Mat is the only one we know of that is suitable for that sized swag.
It's more like the older heavier 4WD mats from the early 2000's, instead of the current self-inflating mats on the market.

The Oztrail stretcher tent sleeping area dimensions are 198 x 80cm, the Megamat dimensions ate 197 x 77cm.

Hi Sinead, if you haven't already check out our video on the tent at about 10:00 - https://youtu.be/ocYyEl6BFgM?t=2, you can see me fitting a queen size double high mat inside which measures about 150cm in width.

This Exped Duo Megamat measures just over 130cm in width and 10cm height which is much lower than the airbed in the video so it will fit easily but it's a double size rather than a queen.

A similar queen size self-inflating mat that we have is the Hexatherm 3D15 SP from Black Wolf which is also 15 cm thick but measures 150cm in width and will also fit.

The ideal layout with Exped mats is 1 x DUO & 2 x Single LXW mats.  These basically give you 2.86m of mattress which is the whole width of the tent.  It also allows space for the internal frame, and generally is the most common configuration families use.

Its hard to say exactly without you trying it out in person, we do get a range of different reports from people on the heavier side of things - both pros and cons. It may be worth looking at the 15cm version for extra thickness.

The sleeping Area dimensions on the Oztent Bunker Pro are 200L x 90W cm, so you'll have plenty of room for the Exped Megamat 10 LXW.

It's a valid question!!  All three mats are similar in size and shape, the differences primarily come down to comfort which is hard to make a clear call on because everyones bodies are different.  Theres no doubt about the EXPED mats leading the charge here, and whilst the other two options have some great feedback, I personally find the S2S Comfort DLX has a slightly better overall feel and comfort.  I also like their valve attachment, which has separate layers for inflating and deflating, as opposed to the Black Wolf which has a rotating valve that can come out and get lost.
Having said that, there are loads of positive reviews on the HexaTherm, so ultimately if you opt to go with either of these alternatives I think you'll be happy.

We tend to sell a mix of queen stretchers with mats or two single stretchers with mats depending on personal preference. All of the double/queen width stretchers have a central bar down the middle, which can be a bit tricky when paired with a queen mat, but if you use two single mats on top of a queen stretcher then that is a fairly popular option. The Oztrail Easy Fold Queen Stretcher in combination two Megamat 10 LXW mats is a good option, although you will end up with a little bit of mat overhang at the edges. Alternately king single stretchers are also popular, as they offer a little more flexibility if you plan to sometimes do solo trips.

It should work with your stretcher, however, you'll probably find that the edges of the mat lift up a little, and the centre creates a bit of a depression given the sag in the stretcher fabric.

If you store the mat in the bag with the valves open it will likely take in a little air which might make it plump up a bit. I'd suggest storing it rolled up in the bag with the valves closed, and just getting it out to check and air a few times each year if you're worried about mould.

We'd recommend using a damp microfibre cloth with a small amount of mild soap to clean off the spillage on your mattress.

The Schnozzel is a frequently requested item, however, they're not available here in Australia. They are designed to fit the Exped mats with a 20mm valve, which is the same as the Sea to Summit mats. We do have access to the Sea to Summit Air Stream Pumpsack which is similar and should do the trick.

You could pop your Thermrests onto your stretchers, that won't be a problem at all. If you're after luxury and comfort, then yes the Exped Megamat 10LXW will be a great option. They are very quick to pack away and have a deflate valve that will allow you to pack it away and roll it up in just a few minutes.

The warranty will cover you against any manufacturing defaults. We find that these mats are excellent quality, and we have very few issues with these mats. One common problem with self-inflating mattresses is small punctures if you get a puncture this isn't covered by warranty, but it can easily be remedied using the supplied repair kit and these instructions. If you do have any problems with the mat during the 5 year warranty, you can submit a warranty claim form and our team will get any issue sorted out for you.

Unfortunately, we don't have any gear bags that will fit the Megamat 10LXW other than the bags that are supplied with the mat themselves. We'd recommend squeezing all of the air out before you begin rolling the mat up so you can get a nice tight roll.

You can use the hand pump that comes with the mattress to make the mattress firm, I would not use an air pump to force air into the mat as you may ruin it.

We find the best fit for the Megamat 10LXW is on the Easy Fold Single Jumbo Stretcher as it gives you a little more room to play with. It will fit on the single, but the 80cm width is right out to the edge of the sidebars, so it can cause a bit of a rise on the sides of the mat.

There is a very small amount of wiggle room with the megamat, however, given that the mat itself is 77cm wide, you'll generally need more than 1cm wiggle room when rolling it up and popping it in the bag. I guess you can always pop it in on an angle.

The Megamat 10LXW will be a great option to pop in a swag. A few of the staff members here use their Megamats in their swags and think that's the best way to go. Generally, your swag will roll a bit smaller with one of these mats, and yes you can roll it up inside the swag.

The Downmat 9LW Sleeping Mat has a built-in hand pump that essentially does the same thing as the separate pump that comes with the Megamat, so it won't work unless you have an older Downmat (over 5 years old) that doesn't have the built-in hand pump with handprints on it.

With so many great swag options it's hard to choose just one, but the Megamat 10LXW will work with the Darche 900 range, The 23Zero 900 range and most of our Oztrail range.

You can certainly sue the Megamat 10LXW in the Dirty Dee 900. The mat will be approximately 10cm narrower than the swag itself but it will be a great option. You can roll the swag up with the mat inside, you may just want to push some of the air out through the deflate valve before you start rolling, but it can certainly be rolled inside.

The Exped Megamat 10LXW will fit most of the wider stretchers that are 80cm wide or more. We think the Oztent King Goanna Stretcher and Oztrail Easy Fold Single Jumbo Stretcher are great options, or if you're after a slightly wider stretcher the Darche XL 100, Outdoor Connection Sundowner Titan, or Oztent RS-1 Stretcher are also great options.

Yes you can certainly use the Megamat 10LXW on the Coleman Big Sky Stretcher Bed Deluxe. The mattress is a few centimetres wider than the stretcher so just keep that in mind. The other thing to be careful of is the springs on the stretcher, we'd suggest laying something over the springs so they don't accidentally cause a hole in your mat.

If its a short time between inflates, probably around 1-1.5 hours with abit of manual inflation to fine tune it.  If its been a few months between trips, and stored rolled up, aim for around 3-4 hours.

The Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat is often referred to as a premium or luxury item here at Snowys. Exped is willing to back the item for 5 years, and we currently have over 100 5-star reviews on the product. They are comfortable, long lasting, excellent quality foam and have a high R-value (insulation value). The Zempire Bomberpad is cheaper but is also thinner, uses lower quality foam, has no measured R-value, and is only backed with a 1-year warranty. There are still a good product but not quite the same level as the Exped.

The Exped Megamat 10LXW will be the best option I can think of for a restless sleeper. We have a few staff here with these mats and they all think they're the bees knees. The fabric is soft and stretchy so it tends to be quiet, and you can vary how the firm the mat is by adding or removing air, so we'd be pretty confident in this mat suiting your needs.

Your best option will be to follow the instructions Exped provide with the Megamat to get the air flowing initially. Generally, they will need a while to inflate the first time you unroll them, hence the 48 hour suggestion.

I've just had a play with our display model RV5 and some Megamat 10LXWs and I think the best use of space would be to put them in lengthways (i.e. foot or head at the door), this way you have room either side for bags etc. If you go width ways it will also fit but someone will always be on the lower sloped side, which could also work. Up to you but I'd go length ways!

It's hard to say whether the Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat would fit on the Helinox Cot 1 as we don't sell the Helinox to check. Having a quick look at the dimensions on their website indicates to me that the Megamat is likely a little too wide and long to fit through.

Just to be sure, I've been downstairs to have a look at the stuff bag that comes with the Exped Megamat 10LXW camp mats and they're not seam sealed, so they won't work as a dry sack. They'll be splash proof but for kayaking, you'll need something more substantial to truly keep it dry on the water. I tested our biggest dry sack, the 65L Big River Bag from Sea to Summit and it's still too short. I think you'll need to inquire at a specialist kayaking retailer for a long, skinny dry bag.

You'll definitely be able to squeeze two of the Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mats to fit your space, you might just end up with a bit of a bulge in the middle, that's all. I'd suggest not fully inflating them so that the air doesn't create a bulge when you squeeze them in to fit. Alternatively, you might want to look at buying a double.

The Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat is a little big for the Zempire Speedy Stretcher Bed. It'll still work fine but just make sure you don't roll off the edge!

As far as width is concerned, your best bet would be the Zempire Megamat Single Camp Mat, it's only going to be about 2cm wider than your stretcher bed. The length is 1cm longer than the Exped, however.

Provided that you fold the Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat nice and tight, you should have no worries at all with stuffing a sleeping bag around the mattress inside the bag. The bags do have a bit of room around the mattress inside.

I'd suggest that the best way to store your Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat would be to deflate it and then roll it up. Leaving any air in it or simply folding it over would make it really bulky for storage. 

We can't help you on that one sorry Jez, we'd have to meet factory minimums to order from Exped, and for a small number of mats, their final shelf price would be huge.  

I'm not even sure of the difference between the regular Megamat and the Outfitter model, it looks like the Outfitter just has heavier outer fabrics, I'd have to look into that further.

Long story short, we're not going to be able to help you on this one sorry.

These mats will always need a little help to inflate fully Jez, that's why they come with a mini pump as an inflation aid. If you store the mat in an uncompressed state and only roll it up right before a trip, you can expect the mat to have inflated as much as it can by itself within a few minutes, then you will need a few more minutes with the mini pump to make it tight.

From new, these mats take a while to inflate as they have been stored in a compressed state since leaving the factory, you'd be best taking it out of its packaging and leaving it for a few days when new, and you'll need to use the mini pump a fair bit initially, but this issue only exists when it is new or if the mat is stored rolled tightly.

As for damaging the mat, they are factory tested to about 5 times the pressure of what would be considered normal inflation, so you're more likely to pass out from hyperventilation or exhaustion than damage the mat unless you are using a high powered pump, which is not recommended. 

We sell tons of these mats every year, they are tried and tested and are providing sound sleep for campers across the globe. I hope this helps.

It's a durable mat Jez, but as with any inflatable product, some care needs to be taken to reduce the risk of punctures. In comparison to the Darche mats, the fabrics are probably not as heavy duty, but on the flip side of this, they have a much more comfortable and less slippery surface to sleep on. I have had a double Exped may in my swag for over four years, it's put up with kids using it as a trampoline and seen us through a number of outback trips, and I've never had to repair a puncture. Hopefully, this gives you some insights into the durability of the mat.

Getting the right stretcher for your Exped Megamat 10 LXW Camp Mat can sometimes be a stressful thought process but rest assured that either of the two you're looking at would be great options. The King Goanna's end bars certainly give some stability to the stretcher but also make it a little more rigid. The Oztrail will have a little more give in it but both are rated to 150kg so one won't be better necessarily than the other.

Absolutely, that would be recommended. We always encourage that any self-inflating mats be stored with the valve open and even during the day at camp, to keep the valve's open to prevent heat from stretching the laminated fabric.

Tough question but I'd probably stick with grabbing another single. Because the walls of the mats are quite steep they do fit together really well, you'll notice the join but it's not really pronounced. Having two singles will save you some money, be a bit easier to pack in a small space like a car boot and give you a bit of versatility if you end up needing a single mat. If you're able to pop in to the shop you'd be welcome to get a few singles out and try them out with the couple straps. I hope this helps!

From comparing the dimensions, the Gecko stretcher is 190cm long, and the Megamat 10 is 197L – so there will be a little bit of overhang but it shouldn’t be very noticeable when you're sleeping on it.

4 of the 10LXW mats will actually squeeze into the single AOS Swag Protection System bag. If you want a little more room to sneak a bit more gear in if required, then I would suggest you move up to the King Single or Double size.

There is no difference between colours in the Exped Megamat 10LXW. We only have new models of both in stock.

In terms of quality, they are both on par with each other in terms of materials, and construction.

They do differ in terms of weight and size, the Megamat is a little heavier, and packs up bulkier than the Comfort DLX (reg wide size).

The Megamat has a higher R Value at 9.5 compared to the Comfort DLX at 5.2 so it will insulate better in cold conditions so that’s something to consider.

Comfort wise I would say that the Megamat has the edge over the Comfort DLX as it is a little denser – but both are top of the line mats.

So from comparing the dimensions of 2 x Megamat 10's joined together with the double stretchers we have in our range - it looks like the Easy Fold Queen Stretcher from Oztrail is the best fit at 200L x 144W - but we don't have those in stock at this time unfortunately. 

Aside from a stretcher, there probably isn't another option to get the same amount of height off the ground, aside from a double air bed but that wouldn't be very stable, and would probably slide around if you moved while asleep. 

There is always the option of looking outside of our range for a stretcher that will accommodate the width and length of the two mats.

If you're referring to the Traveller 3P tent, then yes this mat will fit inside but if you're trying to actually sleep 3 people on three of these mats then unfortunately it's too much of a squeeze sorry. One or two will fit nicely but since the width of the mat is 77cm and the tent width is 190cm, two is the maximum number of mats that can be accommodated.

We have to order Exped products from Europe 6 months in advance through the distributor, so getting our hands on spares like this bag is quite a challenge. However, If you were prepared to wait, we could definitely look into it further for you and see whether getting a bag would be possible.

These Exped Megamat 10 LXW mats are the current model which was released in Australia at the beginning of this year (2017).

You can use a 12V pump with the Megamat, just keep in mind that the nozzles that come with a standard pump may not fit the Megamat perfectly, so you just have to find the closest fit and hold it up to the valve to seal it as best as you can.

I've asked around and as far as I know none of us are familiar with the Thermarest Mondoking 3D mat. From looking at the specs online it seems that it is very comparable to the Megamat in almost every way except it does seem to have a higher R value at 11.4 compared to 9.5 for the Megamat. 

I'm sorry we couldn't give you more details about the Mondoking, I would suggest looking for a local camping shop that has one in store so you can try it in store - that way you'd be able to get a feel for how comfy it is in real life. 

I can say though, that the Megamat 10 is our top selling mat in our range, and arguably the most comfortable if that helps. 

Howdy Allan. The only real way of joining these two mats together is by the coupling kit that can be purchased as an accessory. Unfortunately the manufacturer no longer supplies these as part of the kit and haven't done so for a little while now. However, they are pretty cheap really to hold the two mattresses firmly together. The great thing about the Megamats is the square edges, which allows two mats to hold together almost without dips and gaps. The straps simply go at about the shoulder and the thigh or ankle heights, strapping around and clipping together underneath. The Snowys Code for the Coupler kit is 47563 and you can find the most recent everyday low price by putting that into our Search Bar and hitting enter. This will take you directly to the product.

This is indeed an updated version of the much-loved Megamat 10 LXW from Exped. The updated model now has a smart pack sack (carry bag), as well as being available in green. Not a whole lot to write home about, but why change a good thing.

I believe that Exped do sell a mat cover made specifically for the Megamat 10, but I've checked and it doesn't seem to be available to us in this region, so unfortunately we can't track one down for you Adam.

I'd recommend using the King Goanna Stretcher, it will be much better than having the mat hanging over the end of the stretcher.

We've been selling the Megamat range for several years, and we've never come across that feature before, so it must be something that Exped phased out. 

The current Megamat 10 LXW model doesn't come with the attached joiner feature, so the best way to connect two together would be with a Universal Coupler Kit.

You can most definitely fit 2 x Exped Megamat 10 LXW Sleeping Mats in the Malamoo 3 Xtra, and you'll have some space for your gear.

It is slightly too wide to fit comfortably in the tent but it might squeeze in, with pretty much no room to spare. Both mats together are 154cm wide and the tent is 150cm. It will be a squeeze!

The length itself will be fine as the mats are 197cm long and you have 215cm to play with. If you think this might be too cramped then it might pay to look for a narrower mat.

Hi Lucy, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the Turbo Cabin 380 in the flesh yet, so I'm working on the assumption that the divider will go straight down the middle of the tent. If that's the case, then you'll be able to fit these two Megamats next to each other in one room nicely. We'll get in touch with Black Wolf on Monday to confirm the internal layout of the tent and let you know.

We've just spoken to Black Wolf and they've confirmed the divider is in the middle, so you should have no problem fitting two Megamat 10 LXW's with the wall in place.

I decided the only way to figure out the answer to this question for sure was to test the Megamat and the Mega Deluxe out in the Jet Bunker we have on display. 

Both fit inside the Bunker - though the Megamat was a little more of a tight fit, and neither will move around if you toss and turn. 

As for comfort, I would say that the Exped Megamat was the winner - I personally found it was more supportive as the mat stays level to the edges (instead of tapering off like the Mega Deluxe) and overall, it was just more cushiony.

As far as I can find we haven't had any issues with heat causing damage to the Megamat 10, but given the hot weather we have here I can see how reading that would cause you a bit of concern. 

As far as we can make of it, the instructions are just setting out the limitations for this mat in intense direct heat e.g. 45 degree heat in a vehicle, or a fire. 

In a shaded tent, or covered up in the back of the car this mat should be fine, even in warm weather conditions - as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight for long periods of time.

That's not a dummy question - we're always happy to clarify for you! The main difference is the quality and overall comfort between the two. 

The Exped Megamat is lighter, packs up smaller, is made from higher quality foam, and has a nylon as opposed to a Velour PVC Vinyl surface (which is smoother to touch). 

That's not to say that the Oztrail 4WD mat range isn't good - it does represent good value, and we've had positive feedback about it from our customers. But the Exped Megamat is the most luxurious mat we carry so it does sit above the 4WD mat range. 

G'day Judy - I've just taken a tape measure to both the Megamat 10 and Mega Deluxe and there isn't much in it at all. The Megamat, packaged in its lightweight sack, is 81 x 18Ø cm. The Mega Deluxe, in its plastic shipping sleeve, came in at 80 x 18Ø cm. As for R rating - even if there was a negligible difference you're probably not going to feel it. R9.5 insulation is extremely good - those camping in alpine environments would enjoy it. As a cold sleeper, you'll appreciate it too. Doesn't really narrow it down, does it? Hehe. My personal preference is for the Megamat with its square sides and overall 'feel' and quality. For me, it's just a nicer mat. Hope that helps. Cheers, Paul

G'day Cameron - If you're after the ultimate in camping comfort, yes, definately buy one of these! (How's that for a pitch? But seriously...) Deflated, it'll roll up into your swag just fine. We have a guy here, Ben, who does just that. Before you use it for the first time, though, unroll it, let it loft up for a few days, then roll 'er back up. I can't say that I have tried this sorry Liz, but it's going to be tight. Combined, two Megamat 10LXW measure 154 cm wide and 197 cm long. I'm pretty sure that given the rounded ends, the corners of the mat will be sitting pretty firm against the interior. The Megamat 10 Duo might be a better choice, alternatively the EPE Sim Camper F100 is still 10cm thick but thinner and will fit easier. I'd recommend putting your tent up in the backyard and using a tape measure to get an idea of how the mats will fit and how much space you will have to spare.

One will Debbie but it will be too tight for two of them. Even with one mat the corners of the mat will be touching the ends. The Malamoo tents have dimensions similar to hiking tents, if you want a roomy 2 person pop-up tent then the Malamoo Xtra is the way to go, but will still be too tight to fit a pair of Megamat's into.

I can't say I've tried, or heard of anyone trying this Donna. My thoughts are that it may become a little unstable. Two Megamat's together will be slightly wider than the Anywhere bed, and I'm not sure how you would keep them from sliding around. You would probably be better using an open cell foam mat that can be secured under a fitted sheet, a combination of one Oztrail Camp Mat and one Oztrail Camp Mat Jumbo may be a better solution, provided you had a fitted sheet to accommodate them. Search for product codes 40534 and 36276 to see these on our website. Failing this, I would just add lots of blankets under your sheets.

Hi Robert, these used to come with coupler kits for joining, but they don't any more. We don't have the kits available but they are basically just big straps that go right around the mat, you could make these up with some webbing and clips. The only double fitted sheet we have is from Black Wolf. Given these are designed to fit over two Black Wolf Mega Deluxe mats, it should then also fit over two Exped Megamat's.

Hi Jonathon, the toggle they are referring to is attached to the valve cap on the mat, not the pump. It looks the same as a zipper pull normally seen on clothing. The premise behind inserting it into the inflation valve is to open up the one way rubber (green I think) valve inside, this allows air to enter the mat faster than when the mat is trying to pull air past the valve. As for storage, it is better to store it uncompressed, but it won't destroy your mat, The benefits of storing the mat uncompressed is that it inflates quicker when used next as the foam does not maintain memory in a compressed state. It can also allow better aeration of the mat, particularly if you have inflated the mat by mouth and their is risk of moisture inside. I currently have mine stored compressed, but will let it out of the bag if I find the space to store it that way. I hope this all makes sense, give us a call if you have any questions. 1300 914 007.

You're right Matt, the Exped Megamat does not fully inflate independently, it is designed this way. A lot of the internal foam has been hollowed out to save on packed size and weight, as a result it needs a little assistance to inflate to a firm state. A mini pump is included with the mat to assist with this. As for deflating the mat, it is much the same as other self inflating mats on the market, possible even easier as there is less foam to compress inside the mat, so you are likely to get a smaller rolled size on the first go.

Hi Matt, it comes down to small things when comparing the differences between these two mats. The Exped mat costs a little more, and for this money you get the unique Exped flat valves which are compatible with the included pump and enables easy adjustment of the air inside the mat. The Exped mat also offers a slightly better warmth to weight ratio, and has square edges which creates a larger sleeping surface. I have an Exped mat, and would purchase another if the need arose.
