Offering increased levels of insulation over standard self inflating mats the Exped Synmat 9LW sleeping mat has the same make up as the ever popular Downmats, only microfibre fill replaces down in each chamber.
The Synmat 9LW comes at a friendlier price than the Downmat and has a lighter pack weight, with the only trade off being lesser insulation values. An integrated hand pump prevents dizzy spells and the build up of moisture inside the mat when inflated by mouth.
Exped is an innovative Swiss brand who stand by the quality of their products, which is why each Exped mat is individually tested for airtight integrity prior to shipment. All mats are designed to withstand 5 times the pressure attained during normal inflation, and they back their products with a 5 year warranty.
Very comfortable to lay on however I definitely felt the cold through it at about 12 degrees celcius (not as bad as an air mattress, but much colder than a foam mattress). It's not a self inflating mattress at all (needs to be hand pumped which takes around 5 mins), I obviously misunderstood the description which compares it to self inflating mattresses. But it packs away in less than an minute and easily rolls up very small which is good. Excellent quick delivery by Snowys as usual, thanks
It's strange that you would feel the cold at 12 degrees, these mats are commonly used in sub-zero conditions. It may be worth giving the mat some time to loft up, this will allow the down to expand and insulate better, and will assist if faster inflation as the foam in the pump expands also. If possible store it in an uncompressed or semi-compressed state, this will make for faster set-up and better insulation next time it is used. ~ Ben.
This is a sturdy mattress that inflates quickly and easily with the built in hand pump. Very happy with the size and weight when packed up.
I've been told that we should not store the mattress back in the bag once it's deflated as it will damage it. Is that correct?
Exped recommends that you store the Exped Synmat 9 LW sleeping mat unrolled with valves open in a dry, cool area. Most people do this either by laying it under the bed or by hanging it in the wardrobe.
I'm told inflatable mats must be stored flat and not rolled up , also are these mats difficult to deflate and time consuming , or does the pump work in reverse?
You certainly could remove the mat from a swag and use the Synmat 9 in it's place. To inflate this mat, you open the valve and press down on it to pump it up - this will take about 5 minutes to fully inflate.
To deflate, you just undo the valve, and then roll/press down on the mat and it should be fully deflated in about 5 minutes as well - so all in all, it won't take you very long to set up/pack up each day in a swag.
