The Black Wolf McKinley 75L rucksack is like a teenager’s first car, an economical bushwalking pack decked out with all the bells and whistles.
The adjustable Micro Glide Gel harness is as comfortable on a weekend hike as it is on extended trekking expeditions. Top and front openings make for easy access to your gear while front and side pockets provide storage for quick access items.
Equipped with a tone of extras including rain cover, hydration compatibility, dual compartments and even a music pouch and headphone port for music on the trail.
Agreed with John, the chest straps are poorly designed and come off regularly. I don't know why they are designed to come off but they do. Watch out when you stop for a break. I found though if you put them on upside down they work better. Other than that a great pack, did the green gully with it, nice and light and lots of storage.
Thanks for that Greg, very helpful! Laine :)
Good backpack and great volume. The upper and lower sections are great. The top additional section is great for snacks.
The two x side expanding sections are also good, although can't really fit a 3L Blackwolf water bladder. Would suggest a 2L max if putting in a side pocket.
The hip straps are good.
The accessory straps at the bottom (eg for sleeping mat) are very good and handy.
BIG PROBLEM - the chest strap clips. They SUCK. They are terrible. The clips that connect the chest strap to the arm straps are very poorly designed and came off numerous times on both my backpack and my wife's. Completely different chest sizes and it still happened.
One would think that this would not be an issue for a good backpack as this.
That's the only real problem. Everything was great.
Used it for a 5 day hike (Overland Track in Tassie) and it performed well.
The Raincover is good. The high contrast orange is brilliant as we were visible in strong fog and rain at a decent distance to other walkers.
The Raincover is not fully weatherproof - get yourself some waterproof dry sacks for your belongings such as the Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Super-Lightweight Dry Sack to protect your belongings.
We trekked in heavy rain and whatever was NOT in a dry sack got wet despite use of the Raincover. The rain was heavy (20mm of rain that day).
Great rucksack with a lot of adjustment, plenty of room inside and comfortable to wear, I've used mine quite a few times on mult iday hikes and haven't had any failures with it
I did a lot of shopping around for this bag and once again Snowys was the best price. Solid construction with easy height adjustments, this is my camping/bushcraft bag when I don’t need a more modular system.
Where does the Hydration pack sit inside the backpack?
In the main section of the Black Wolf McKinley, there's a pouch along the back of the bag that you slide your hydration bladder into. Keep in mind that if you're using a Black Wolf bladder that the 2L will fit but the 3L won't.
Is there a certain size or brand of hydration pack that will fit this pack, or will any fit?
We know for sure that you can use the Black Wolf McKinley Rucksack with a 3L Black Wolf Bladder or 3L Camelbak Bladder as those are the ones we've tried for ourselves in store. It's likely other brands will fit as well, but those are the ones we know are going to be compatible.
Many backpacks come with different harness sizes and make a specific fit. How does this pack adjust for different sized people? I'm looking for a pack for a teenage girl who will be hiking four times in a year for a week at a time in varying environments including alpine. I want to know she'll be comfortable as well as sticking to a pretty tight budget! Cheers, Tahti
