how much is just the charger?

Unfortunately, we're not able to source just the charger cable for these, however, if you pop into Jaycar, or a similar store they should have something that will do the trick.
Can I purchase a 240v charger, and if so, what is the cost

The Companion XR5 Rechargeable LED Spotlight comes with a USB charge cable and 12v cigarette plug so if you wanted to charge this from 240V then you can just plug it into a USB wall charger.
the red light comes on when we plug it into 12v does a green light come on when fully charged

I've just had a quick look at the owners manual for the Companion XR5 Rechargeable LED Spot Light. It should turn green when it's fully charged, yes.
After recharging the ligh last 20mis An attempt to charge was made from a different, incorrect charger - could that have damaged the battrey?

Without looking at the battery and doing some testing, it does sound a little like maybe the charger you used didn't have the correct voltage and you may have damaged the battery of your Companion XR5 Rechargeable LED Spotlight.
