Great product

I can not believe some of the comments in these reviews. They expect $120 12volt cooler to perform like a $3500 aircon. This little unit is a beauty, ideal to give you relief on hot dry days upto 30c with all the windows open in our motorhome. Evap coolers of any size will not work in high humidity,so turn on the refrigerated aircon, but you will need to close all the windows and doors.

Not impressed

Great design package, but unfortunately largely ineffective! Opted to by a cheep box fan at our first location, which was great! Unfortunately, only 240 volt.

I'm sorry to hear that Chris - as these evaporative coolers are fairly new to us, we'd like to know more about why the cooler isn't... well, cooling.

If you have a second free, could you please send us an email (, we'd like to see what we can do. Laine :)

It does the job

I purchased the mini cooler despite mixed reviews as i couldn't find anything similar online and the weather was getting hot. It is easy to use and has a rechargeable battery which is handy if you don't have power. It blows air around and is better than having nothing on a hot day, we are happy with our purchase. If you are looking at getting something to cool your tent/camper down maybe look at getting a reverse cycle aircon but you won't find anything this size.

It's good providing weather no more than 25*

As I'm a truckie chick without a bunk cooler at present I brought this hoping it would help me alittle....And it does keep it pretty cool as long as you start it up as soon as you pull up for your rest break understandably - providing, it's no hotter than 25 degrees. Then I'm sorry it can't handle it. But all in all it's not too bad providing it gets no hotter than 25 degrees

Does exactly what I thought it would

I have difficulty breathing due to throat cancer and I find that breathing is a bit more laboured during hot weather so as I sit at the computer a fair bit I use the cooler to blow air at me and I feel a lot more comfortable. Thanks a lot. Very satisfied customer.

Little Beauty

I have the older model. It looks similar but the new one on sale now looks more sleek. I have used it in very hot and humid conditions as a lap cooler, it does the job! Or if I wanted to sleep I'd position it about 70cms from my head. I have had no problems with the unit. I am very happy with the product. It is small, so don't think this is the answer to cooling off a room or caravan. I have used it longer than 7hrs on a full charge. When operating it in the air con mode, make sure it is on a level surface because it will start leaking water. Great little product!

does the job

bought this when contemplating significant periods of very hot days along the Murray. While the fan could be stronger, the cooler works quite fine and takes the edge of sleeping in tents on those extreme days/nights

Biggest waste of money!!

I bought this Evap cooler thinking it would be better than a pedestal fan. The main reason was for my 11 month old to take a nap and take the edge off the heat. Used it on a 25c degree day and a 40c day and both times absolutely useless!! There is no point in wasting space with this item. I can't believe I paid $120 for this! Very upset customer!

Response from Snowys Jan 11 2017

Sorry to hear this has not lived up to your expectations Jodie. We have had mixed feedback on this evaporative cooler, mostly good, often the negatives are from users expecting it to cool a large area. With regards to it performing better than a pedestal fan, the air to be coming from the unit should be cooler, but it won't move as much air simply because of the smaller comparative size. That being said, we want our customers to be happy with every purchase, and we value all feedback on the products we choose to sell. Please get in touch so we can make things right for you ~ Ben.

Can you use the 240 volt plug in a 12 volt socket?1 answer

We have solar panels and an inverter giving 12 volts. I would like to be able to plug into the 12 volt power socket to run this overnight. Is this possible?

- Ferndale(2 months ago)

G'day Karyn,

The Companion Rechargeable Mini Evaporative Cooler comes with a 12V plug that you can use to run the cooler overnight.

Recharging1 answer

Can I charge unit through 12v connection in van and how much drain on caravan battery which is charged with solar.

- Park Ridge(4 months ago)

G'day Ann,

You can charge the Companion Rechargeable Mini Evaporative Cooler using 12v, so you'll be fine running it through your caravan. The battery on the cooler is a 6v battery with a 4.5Ah draw.

Refund1 answer

Is there any refund if I don't like the product?

- 2131(6 months ago)

G'day Ekta,

If you're not happy with something that you've purchased from Snowys, there is the option to return it within 60 days.

However, it has to be in as-new condition, so it must be unopened, unused and with all the labels attached.

You can check out the return policy in full on this page here. Hope that helps Ekta!

Dual power1 answer

Does this unit work from a cigarette lighter plug and does it come with this attachment. Also can it run on a 240 volt supply?

- Newcastle(1 year ago)

Hey Peter,

The Companion Mini Evaporative Cooler comes with both a 240V AC and a 12V DC cigarette lighter adapters so you can run it from vehicle or wall power outlet.

- Sailors Gully, Bendigo(1 year ago)

G'day Les,

Good news is that water container is available as a spare part, but as Companion have just updated this Cooler we'll need to know which model you have.

Give our customer support team a call on 1300 914 007, and we'll be able to sort something out for you.

Extra 6v batteries1 answer

Thanks for previous replies. Can you tell me please, do you sell extra 6v batteries for the Companion. Does the one battery have "at least" 6 hours on low speed or is that maybe a little overstated as I have read. Thanks

- Chelsea, Victoria(1 year ago)

We don't sorry Terry, they are not readily available 'off the shelf'. However, the battery is removable, so we would be able to get one as a spare part, or it is highly likely that somewhere like Battery World would have a suitable replacement. As for the run time, this is an average and can vary slightly. We have not tested the full run time, so if you have read experiences by others then this is probably a good indication. We are working on getting new images from our supplier and will have these uploaded as soon as we can.

Cut out for Companion1 answer

Can a separate item be purchased that will cut out the Companion when the battery voltage falls below a certain level

- Chelsea, Victoria(1 year ago)

Nothing I am aware of sorry Terry, at least not in our range anyway. It's probably a question for an auto electrician, sorry I could not be of much help.

- Snowys(1 year ago)

Will Companion cut out at certain voltage level?1 answer

I assume, when plugged into a caravan 12v socket the Companion will cut out when the voltage falls below say 10.5?

- Chelsea, Victoria(1 year ago)

It doesn't have a cutout to save your battery sorry Terry, you'd be best using it on an auxiliary battery, or monitoring your battery during use. To give you some figures to work with, the built-in 6V battery is rated at 4.5Ah, which gives about 4 hours of run time on high. A larger battery would give a much longer run time.

- Snowys(1 year ago)

Using in Caravan all night - say 10 hours1 answer

I assume I can use the Companion - plugged into the caravan 12v socket and also use the battery for part of the night?

- Chelsea, Victoria(1 year ago)

If the internal battery runs flat, you can run the Evaporative Cooler from a 12V cigarette socket or 240V outlet Terry, the only concern is that it will continue to drain the battery. It would depend on the size of your battery as to how long it would run. The built-in battery is 6V, 4.5ah, so a 12V car battery would provide a much longer run time. Just a heads up on this too, Companion have updated this Evaporative cooler, we have the current model in stock, but the images are still the old model, we are currently chasing up new images for this.

water filling 1 answer

How long does the 800ml last and does it have an external water bag like i have seen on other camping air coolers

- Gold Coast (2 years ago)

Hi Julieann, this cooler uses 50ml of water per hour, so the 800ml tank will last for 16 hours run time. The water tank is in the bottom of the unit, you can see it in the picture there :)

- Snowys(2 years ago)

Can you supply both power supplies for this unit?1 answer

Have lost both power supplies and looking to re-purchase. Thanks

- Greenwith(3 years ago)
G'day Patrick - You certainly can buy replacement power supplies. We don't have them in stock, but can order them in from Companion. The codes are COMP378-01S and COMP378-02S for the AC and DC respectively. If you wish for us to order them in for you, do give us a bell on 1300 914 007 or send an email to, and we'll go about it. Hope that helps. Cheers, Paul

What volume of space can this effectively cool?1 answer

- WOLLONGONG, NSW(3 years ago)
Great question Alicia. Companion list the fan air volume at 60m3/hour. In our experience, this is suitable to cool a 3-4 person tent, however there are a number of variables that can affect the effectiveness of this cooler. Like any airconditioner, it will not work as well on a really hot day. If it's 40 degrees out and your tent is sitting in the full sun then you'll find that it may cool your tent by a few degrees but probably not to a comfortable temperature, much like the air conditioner in my car when it's been parked in the sun all day on those really hot days! On an average summer day, with your 3-4 person tent in a shaded area, this cooler will take the edge off the heat and make it more comfortable. As there are so many variables there is no hard and fast answer, but this should give you an idea. If you'd like to discuss this in further detail, please give us a call on 1300 914 007.
