My C-5 bag is excellent but I need extra in winter. The fill is 250gsm. Is the new Pilbara C-7 the same fill gsm (as not stated)? Or is it just the hood that gives it the minus 7C rating? The new hooded model is 3.84kg whilst old model is 3.3kg so unlikely just 0.5kg attributed to hood. Thank you.
G'day Ray,
Its a great question, and not one we can answer with any certainty.
General car camping/4WD style bags are not actually tested for comfort ratings, so theres no real basis for comparing bag models either within or against other brands.
Usually these brands will look at the fill and isulation type, and use this to make a fair estimation of warmth.
Coleman haven't provided and details on the fill weight for their new C-7 bag, but I am assuming it is using i higher performing insulation, and will have a slightly higher fill weight, and thats what would attribute the wramer rating they have given it.
Thanks Lauren. I have now eyeballed the new Pilbara C-7. Compared to the original C-5 hoodless (blue chequer inside) it does appear slightly more fill loft (thicker) but marginally & I’d say my C-5 has flattened as 3 years old, particularly since I roll to pack rather than stuff to pack. I also note there is a newer C-5 (dark grey chequer inside) and the material, colour, fill weight, thickness is exactly as per the C-7. I conclude the C-7 is the same as the new C-5 but has a hood that gives a minus 7C rating. Also, the C-7 is larger & hard to pack if rolled due to the hood. The packed size is quite large compared to C-5. Hope this helps others.
Hi, how does this one compare to the original C-5 sleeping bag please regarding warmth. I have the older model and you gave it a 5 comfort rating, which I think is quite accurate. Is this bag quite a lot warmer? As I do need an extra blanket with the other one when going winter camping.
G'day Bec,
It would be abit warmer, but not a super crazy difference.
The new model has a hood which is great for adding extra warmth and helping to keep heat in - especially if you've got the drawstring pulled in abit.
