If you’ve been looking for a down filled sleeping bag that won’t break the bank and will keep you warm in colder weather – you can call off the search party, as the Hiker 500 ticks all those boxes and more.
The Hiker 500 is tested to the ISO23537:2016 international standard and provides a comfort temperature rating of -2° Celsius and a lower temperature limit of -8° Celsius. It’s filled with 700+ loft water repellent down which is responsibly sourced for your peace of mind and has a contoured hood to provide extra warmth around your head.
The bag also has a host of other features to keep you comfortable on those colder nights. There is a draft which will help stop warmth escaping, an anti-bite zipper system to prevent fabric snags, one-handed hood adjustment, and glow in the dark zipper pullers to make access easy. When you’re on your trip, put it in the included lightweight compression stuff sack, and afterwards air it out with the hanging loops and stash it in the mesh storage bag.

Zipper side1 answer
When selecting left/right zipper, just making sure this taken from the point of view of someone inside the sleeping bag? So it is the same as other clothing (the left shoe goes on the left foot)? So the image shown is of a "zipper on the right" even though the zipper is on the left of the picture?

G'day Derek,
The zipper side is based on the side when you're laying flat on your back. So yes, the left hand zipper will follow your left-hand side from shoulder down, and the right-hand zipper will follow your right-hand side from shoulder down. The image shown is of a right-hand zipper, I hope that helps clarify it.

Left zipper version?1 answer
Do you have a left zipper version for joining to the same sleeping bag with a right zipper? Or is this sleeping bag not capable of this?

G'day Adam,
This sleeping bag is available in both left or right-hand zips. The selection box located above, (just above the price) will give you this option. They can be zipped together, not side by side but sandwiched one on top of the other. which does create a small foot area for one person plus a hood under and on top of their face. So they are not ideally suited as a double sleeping bag.

Do you have the compressed volume for the Hiker 5001 answer
My 13 year old scout daughter feels the cold during winter camps. We currently have a Denali 500g fill weight pack but it's compressed volume is probably 6L and is too big for her pack. My 400g Denali has a smaller compression volume but is not warm enough. The Spark SP3 has a good review for warmth and has an excellent compressed volume at 3.7L. Any advice?

The Black Wolf Hiker 500 Sleeping Bag doesn't have a volume litre-age, however, I've just done a calculation and they come in at about 8L, so probably a little too big for what you're looking at. The Spark range pack quite small, but obviously come with a higher price tag.

The Black Wolf Hiker 500 Sleeping Bag's zipper goes right around the foot end of the bag to allow it to be unzipped all the way and turned into a blanket, yes.

I've just given Black Wolf a buzz to find out for you. The bloke I spoke to was 90% sure that it was a duck down that they use in the Black Wolf Hiker 500 Sleeping Bag but he was going to confirm and call me back. As soon as I know for sure, I will let you know.

I've just heard back from the supplier, and they weren't able to confirm whether it is goose or duck nor could we figure it out from checking the label on the inside of the bag on display.
