When comfort, plushness and space are a priority, the Explore ExII from Sea to Summit is the ultimate sleeping bag, that doesn’t feel like a sleeping bag.
This rectangular design has an ultra-wide circumference, so you have plenty of wiggle room so you won’t feel restricted. With a comfort rating of 2°C and a lower limit -4°, this bag is a great all-rounder for general conditions. You can adjust this bag according to the weather – when it’s chilly, zip it up and pull in the drawcords, and when it’s warmer -the multiple zips allow you to stick your limbs out or use it as a quilt.
This bag features a 30D nylon shell, with a 20D nylon lining and R.D.S certified 750+ loft ultra-dry down fill which provides superior insulation. To prevent cold spots, there are vertical baffles over the chest, while the side block baffles keep the down at the top for ultimate insulation and warmth. You can also stash your phone or other valuables in the large internal security pocket, and connect this bag to a sleeping mat thanks to the adjustable webbing loop system.
Designed especially for car-based camping, sleeping in huts, or nights out in your van – the Explore ExII Sleeping Bag from Sea to Summit won’t let you down when it comes to luxurious comfort.

Looks like this replaces the Basecamp BC2 down insulation? As all the Basecamp sleep bags are now synthetic insulation.
G'day Rod,
Yes, you're spot on, Sea to Summit made a few changes to their sleep systems back in 2019, including introducing the Explore series which replaced the Basecamp down series.
Trying to work out the difference between the explore and ascent bags . I can’t decide which to get 🤪
G'day Lucas,
Firstly, they're both great bags, so either way, I'm sure you'll love it! If you're looking at the Explore EX2, then the Ascent AC1 is going to be the most direct comparison, as they're both the same temperature bags, the Ascent AC2 is a little warmer, so can be compared to the Explore EX3. The main difference is the bag shape, and features.
The Explore series have a slightly roomier construction and are defined as a contoured rectangle, they have zippers down the full length of both sides and the foot, so you can completely separate the top and bottom if you wish to. The EX2 have 450g of 750 DryDown and are made using 30D nylon, which makes them a tad heavier and bulkier than their Ascent counterpart.
The Ascent series are a tapered rectangle construction, with a slightly narrower foot area, they have a full length left zip, half-length right zip, and a foot zipper, so lots of flexibility, but not a complete separation. The AC1 has 330g of 750 Dry Down, and are made using 20D nylon, so they pack a little smaller and lighter than the Explore EX2.
Hello. Is this EX2 model the same as the old BCII (down) model? Specifically: 1) The top half can definitely be removed from the base? 2) If so, do the sleeping pad loops anchor to the top section, or the base section? 3) also, do you know the weight of the top section by itself, without the base section (ie: just the top as a quilt)? P.S Any chance Ben can do a video review? Thanks
G'day Carl,
I've just had a play with one here so I can definitely answer your questions :) I can confirm that the EX2 is the new version of the previous Basecamp BCII (down), they've changed the name to avoid confusion! 1. Yes you can remove the top half from the base. 2. The sleeping bad loops anchor to the bottom section 3. The top section itself weighs 716g so you could use it as a quilt and zip the two sides together a little at the bottom to create a little pocket to slide your mat into.
