Using while charging in car1 answer

Hi, I currently have a Companion Li40 which can power my fridge and be charged via the car’s cig socket while travelling. I am looking at moving up to the Rover 1300. Can this one do the same thing? The manual says “Can my Rover charge while in use? Yes. However it is not recommended as it can cause damage to the battery life over the long term.” That’s on p15 of the manual under “FAQS”. How serious is this? It seems like a severe limitation if it is correct and meaningful. It would also suggest that the same limitation would apply to solar charging while powering things like a fridge. If it’s literally correct (and not just some legal covering-of-the-tail), it would render the Rover 1300 almost useless. And that would apply to the Rover 600 & 1000 too, since they share the same manual. Any thoughts would be great.

G'day Trevor,

As a retailer we have to stand by the recommendation from the product manufacturer- if you use this power station frequently as a pass through charger, it is likely to have a negative long term effect on the station's chemical lifespan. This would also have applied to your original Companion Li40 powerstation- it is a fact which applies to all rechargeable batteries.

I encourage you to read more about the impacts of pass through charging here (this station uses an LFP battery with a standard BMS).

Solar1 answer

Hi there, I already have the rover 40Ah and the 120w solar blanket. Can the same 120w solar blanket be used to charge the Rover 1300 (albeit much slower)?

Michael - Sydney, NSW(1 year ago)

G'day Michael,

Yep, it sure can, but you are correct that it will slowly feed power in but depending on your load it could be enough to keep the unit topped up during a trip.

Water rating1 answer

Hello does this have a IP water resistance rating ?

Corey - North Wollongong, NSW (2 years ago)

G'day Corey,

The new Rover Series does not have an IP water resistance rating.

Companion states in its manual: "Do not allow this product to come into contact with any liquid. Keep out of rain and avoid operating in areas of high humidity. If water does enter the product it must not be used or turned on again. Place in a cool dry area until fully dry."
