There are a few reasons why the Mitchell Discovery Swag from OZtrail is our biggest seller– it’s well made, easy to use, and won’t break the bank. What more could you ask for?
If you prefer your swag to blend into the lay of the land, then the Khaki version is built just for you. Constructed from tough 330gsm ripstop canvas to keep off the elements from above, and with a 520gsm PVC vinyl bucket floor to protect you from sodden ground – the Mitchell is built for Aussie conditions.
The large full top opening makes getting in and out of this swag easy, while the head and foot awnings facilitate ventilation. When the weather is cold keep the canvas layer zipped up, and when it heats up unzip to the No-See-Um meh layer for air flow and insect protection in a warm climate.
This dome swag features Durallium 7001 Alloy poles for stability and to increase your interior space, and you can add an optional centre ridge pole to pitch the Mitchell without guy ropes. The 5cm high-density open-cell foam mattress provides a solid base to sleep on, and you can keep your phone or headtorch close in the two inner storage pockets.
Perfect for campers who like a compact bedding option, or the tourer who wants a quick and easy set up by the side of the road – the Mitchell Discovery offers a tough and durable and affordable place to rest your head at night.
These units are pretty good, although the bottom strut can be a struggle to fit while the swag is new. We followed the recommendations to wet and dry the swag to season it. But it seemed dumb as if you are going to get these wet, then that is exactly what would happen. They would wet then dry. What am i missing?
Good question; seasoning is a term that refers to dousing your swag in water so that all of the tiny holes made by the needle during the manufacturing process will swell to seal up the holes. This is a step that will prevent water from leaking into your shelter.
If you're interested to know more, we've put together a guide on how to care for your swag.
Hope this helps, Laine :)
We have just purchased this swag for my daughter. We love it! Great quality and made to last !
Mattress is comfy, it’s a comfy size, waterproof (although got pretty damp inside, probably because I forgot to zip open the ventilation flap). Material finish & design not quite as good as my mates slightly cheaper Darsche swag of the same size...
Put it this way: I’d feel pretty ripped off if I hadn’t got this on a decent sale. Not that it isn’t a good swag, there are just other swags on the market for circa $200 that are at least as good as this one...
Wow, how swags have changed since my first one 20 years ago. Did heaps of research on which one to buy, this is the one we ended up choosing and we are super happy, gonna but 2 more for our family
A good quality swag which was easy to put up and then pack up after a few days fishing on the beach. I'm 6ft tall and found it roomy and comfortable, looking forward to years of use. Bought the Oztrail centre ridge pole kit with it to make it free standing on the sand which worked well.
Great quality, very roomy and comfortable mattress, pricing very reasonable for product
Swag it self is good value ,however the picture showed the spreader bar which has to be ordered separately which impacted to total price. Also the swag did not come with any instructions which would have been handy for assembly.
Thanks for the feedback Peter and we're sorry it wasn't clear enough on the page. We've since made a tweak to the image which hopefully shows that it's not included but rather comes as an accessory. Laine
waterproofing and meaning of gsm rating
The Oztrail Mitchell Discovery swags are waterproof. But don't forget to have a read of our swag care guide on our blog. That'll talk you through seasoning the canvas before you head out in the field with it to make sure you stay dry. The GSM rating is referring to the weight of the fabric so it is a good guide to how strong the fabric will be.
What size is the mattress in this supposed to be? I just received one, and although the length of the swag is as specifed at 210cm, the mattress is only 190cm long. I have the Mitchell Expedition Double, and in that the mattress fills the whole floor and is 210cm long. Could be a problem for me as I'm taller than 190cm...
Like with most swags, the mattress in the OZtrail Mitchell Discovery KS Swag comes in a vacuum-packed state, so it can sometimes take up to 48 hours to get to its full size the first time you open it. If after 48 hours, it's still not the right length, give us a buzz on 1300 914 007 and our customer service team will be able to help you out.
Do oztrail still make a canvas floor swag? They all seem to have gone to pvc.
Good observation. Oztrail now only have PVC floors on all their swags.
I'm looking at a sleeping back to use in this swag. I will be using the swag in the SE of South Australia, to the bush between Broken Hill & Bourke.
I would suggest that the best sleeping bag for your trip would be a Coleman Pilbara C-5 Sleeping Bag. Most bags would fit fine but this one would be nice and warm and doesn't have a hood.
Looking at options for Me wife and 2 kids. Thought maybe to doubles would work best
If you have the extra Centre Ridge pole, do you still need to have the centre hoop pole inside the swag or is just the end hoop poles enough ? Thanks
Depending on how you tension the Oztrail Mitchell Discovery KS Swag at each end whether it be with the ridge pole or with the guy ropes, you won't need the middle pole to hold the swag up. The primary purpose of the middle pole is to give the swag structure and shape, which is most useful when it rains to prevent sagging and ensure runoff.
