Offering increased levels of insulation over standard self-inflating mats the Exped Synmat 9LW sleeping mat has the same makeup as the ever popular Downmats, only microfibre fill replaces down in each chamber.
The Synmat 9LW comes at a friendlier price than the Downmat and has a lighter pack weight, with the only trade-off being lesser insulation values. An integrated hand pump prevents dizzy spells and the build-up of moisture inside the mat when inflated with your breath. Exped is an innovative Swiss brand who stand by the quality of their products, which is why each Exped mat is individually tested for airtight integrity prior to shipment.
Like all Exped mats, the Synmat 9LW is designed to withstand 5 times the pressure attained during normal inflation and is backed with their 5-year warranty.

Most people are seeking lighter weight - probably half this weight - especially as we age - we are looking for light weight features -Is the comfort/ insulation etc likely to be worth having to carry increased weight?
G'day Inez,
The Synmat 9 LW certainly isn't the lightest mattress on the market, however they do have a very good R-value, so can be used in almost any climate worldwide. In terms of comfort, they are 9cm thick, so are amongst the thickest options available. If your preference is for something lighter, then you may need to sacrifice on R-value and comfort. We'd recommend looking at the Sea to Summit Ether Light Insulated mats, and the Thermarest Neoair mats.
I would like to the mat to test its comfort level as I sometimes get a sore back from my current sleeping mats when hiking/camping and I want to make sure this one is suitable given the price.
G'day Rob,
I've checked with the team at Brendale and they don't currently have a Synmat 9LW display model, but they do have the Downmat 7LW display model so you could give that a try for comparison if you'd like.
Exped synmat 9
G'day Jillian,
We can't see why you wouldn't be able to use it as long as it fits within the stretcher or bunker.
Is there an inflating bag that can attach to the exped mats to inflate. I find the internal pump a proverbial pain to sue after a long day.
G'day Mark,
Unfortunately not, the Exped mats with the internal pump can only be inflated using the built-in hand pump.
Hi I would like to get two covers for the exped mats I have bought from you to provide more protection for the mat. Can you stock them?
G'day Richard,
At this point in time we don't stock the mat covers for the Exped mats, and as we have to order these at least 6 months in advance we won't be stocking them in the near future. It might be best to purchase one online from an international seller who
Thanks for your previous response Ben. Is there a significant comfort difference between Sea to Summit Red and 9 LW? I experience back trouble so padding is important to me. I hope to use it in NZ and Alaska at some point. Thanks.
G'day Raelene,
I've just had a lay down on both the Sea to Summit Comfort Plus and the Exped Synmat 9 LW Sleeping Mat. I found the Sea to Summit to be generally more comfortable when lying on my back but when I rolled onto my side, I found it to be a little thin. The Sea to Summit option was also a little narrow, I'm not big by any stretch of the imagination but found myself using every inch of the mat. The Exped is roomier and a little better for restless or side sleepers I feel.
Hi, Can these sleeping mats be used in the Sea to Summit Chair. The one designed for use with the Sea to Summit sleeping mat range?
G'day Raelene,
I just had a crack at trying to get the Exped Synmat 9 LW Sleeping Mat to work with a Sea to Summit Air Chair but found it to be too wide to fit in nicely, it didn't really work very well.
I've been told that we should not store the mattress back in the bag once it's deflated as it will damage it. Is that correct?
G'day Des,
Exped recommends that you store the Exped Synmat 9 LW sleeping mat unrolled with valves open in a dry, cool area. Most people do this either by laying it under the bed or by hanging it in the wardrobe.
I'm told inflatable mats must be stored flat and not rolled up , also are these mats difficult to deflate and time consuming , or does the pump work in reverse?
G'day Natalie,Â
You certainly could remove the mat from a swag and use the Synmat 9 in it's place. To inflate this mat, you open the valve and press down on it to pump it up - this will take about 5 minutes to fully inflate.
To deflate, you just undo the valve, and then roll/press down on the mat and it should be fully deflated in about 5 minutes as well - so all in all, it won't take you very long to set up/pack up each day in a swag.Â
