Spacious, optimally ventilated and ergonomic – the Futura Vario 45+10 SL from Deuter is the ultimate trekking companion.
If you find that other packs are too big for your frame, this pack has a slimline fit meaning the back is shorter so it’s ideal for those who need a smaller carry system. This pack features side pockets, a pocket for your valuables, a sternum strap, a pocket for your wet or dirty gear, a detachable rain cover, a separate bottom compartment, and is compatible with a hydration system.
The Futura Vario uses the Aircomfort Sensic Vario System. This is made up of a flexible spring steel frame which helps to transfer your load and a VariSlide system which allows you get the perfect fit for your back. The arched profile frame helps transfer the weight to your hips, the mesh back ventilates, and the flexible hip fins ensure that the weight is comfortably distributed.
When you’re on a longer trek, you need a pack that will carry weight comfortably while allowing plenty of airflow to keep you cool – which is what the Futura Vario 45+10 SL is perfect for.

I understand the futura vario has the trampoline back system which the air contact lite does not and weighs a bit more than both the 45+10 and 60+10 air contact lite packs. Are there any other differences between the two lines of packs? Am I better off spending $20 less on a lighter pack (the 45+10 air contact lite)? or alternatively am I better off spending an additional $10 on the larger 60+10 air contact lite? The pack will be used for weekends away in the bush but I also intend for it to be used on extended trips as well (overland track and great ocean walk).
G'day Phil,
You're right, the Futura Vario has the 'trampoline' style back panel vs the Air Contact Lite's classic padded back panel and it will really come down to fit/comfort for most people. Personally, I find the trampoline style very comfortable but from years of experience fitting packs this certainly isn't the case for everyone.
My breakdown of the pro's and cons would be - The Futura style will be better in warm weather and it includes a rain cover but it does push the load further away from your body and is a little heavier. The AC Lite style keeps the load really close and is possibly a bit tougher in the long run, but it doesn't come with a rain cover. Both have similar stiffness and padding in the shoulder straps and hip belt.
Capacity will really depend on the duration of your trips, but also what kind of other gear you own. If you're the kind of hiker that has all the super compact, lightweight gear you could get away with a 45 , but in general I'd say a 60 will make packing all that food for the Overland track much easier on cold mornings. I carried a 70L for the Overland track but went with a lighter 50L pack when I walked the Great Ocean Walk as I didn't need all those warm clothes you'll take to Tassie. I hope this helps, give me a call if you'd like to discuss further.
