The Twilight Bivy from Black Diamond is the perfect emergency shelter that will help shield you from muddy or wet conditions when your tent fails you. Not just handy in a crazy downpour, the Twilight is perfect for staunch minimalists who’ll get a kick out of the Twilight’s miniscule weight and pack size.
To look at it, you wouldn’t think that this thing would keep you dry, but the Twilight is constructed from single layer fabric that is breathable and water-resistant. With a zippered entry at shoulder height, you can get in and out of your bivy with ease. The mesh panel at head height will also give you the airflow you need and condensation from building up in your shelter.
The four season rating on this shelter means that you can use it all year round in a whole range of different weather conditions. For a lightweight and multipurpose shelter option, the Black Diamond Twilight Bivy is the perfect insurance.
I recently had opportunity to try this bivy and was very dissapointed. We were camping under shelter with temperatures dropping to about 1 degree. I have a 1200g down sleeping bag and was very snug i did not need to close the bivy completely so that was great however in the morning my sleeping bag was very wet from condensation. the bag is also very difficult to get in and out of especially if you have your camp mat inside with you as i did on my first night. My second night was on top of my mat but my bag was even wetter in the morning. I love the weight and look of this bivy but i have now returned it as it did not keep me dry at all.
Thanks for passing on your feedback. Sorry to hear that you've been faced with a few challenges with your Black Diamond Twilight Bivy. I have a bivy that I love but can also recognise that as a simple piece of gear, you do sacrifice a few features for smaller size and less weight.
Without knowing specific details, it appears that there is more moisture either already within the bivy (damp clothing/gear) or being produced (through sweat/breathing) than what the breathability of the Black Diamond Twilight Bivy can handle. This is very uncommon, but also possible. This, in turn, would be what is generating the condensation. What throws me, however, is that you've left the hood open which should be providing more than enough ventilation for the bivy bag. Another possibility is that it's actually dew through the night that could be coming through via the hood and making your sleeping bag wet. As you can see, it's hard to put a finger on the issue.
In regards to getting in and out, this is always a challenge. Unfortunately, it's one of the downsides to using a minimalistic piece of equipment. I'd still recommend keeping your mat inside and then just trying to wriggle your way into your sleeping bag/bivy.
Again, we're very sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with the Black Diamond Twilight Bivy.
Does this bivy sit flat or rest on your face? How is it propped up? Also what are the dimensions when it is packed up?
The Black Diamond Twilight Bivy will rest on your face. You can elevate it off your face by tying a rope to tabs along the zip which can then be tied up to a tree (or similar) above. It's packed size is 8 x 13 cm.
