Don’t judge a sleeping bag by its cover. The Oztent Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag Series II has a rugged canvas exterior, with a cosy removable fleece lining and extra width so even the largest of statures will enjoy a good night's sleep.
This sleeping bag features a comfort rating of -5°C, and a minimum of -10°C, thanks to the two layers of T-Therm polyester fibres. The ripstop canvas shell provides unprecedented durability, and the contoured hood helps trap warmth inside the bag. It's got a zip connect feature which allows to bags to be joined together to form a double, the inner storage pocket allows you to stash valuables safely, and the fleece liner can be removed for use as a summer weight bag.
When you need a sleeping bag that's big, warm, and tough, the Oztent Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag Series II is ideal.
Would you recommend washing this sleeping bag before use? I am really worried it will lump up even with hand washing.
G'day Marian,
That personal preference, but I've personally never washed sleeping bags before use. Generally sleeping bags can be challenging to wash, so we recommend using a liner, and spot cleaning if required - avoid actually washing if possible.
Some ripstop fabric is also waterproof. What about the Rivergum outer shell?
G'day Maz,
No, it's not waterproof, it's ultimately just a lightweight cotton 'canvas' similar to a heavy-duty apparel fabric. It's nice and light a soft.
Hi, Will this roll up inside a Darche 900 dusk to Dawn swag with a 5cm mattress and fit inside the bag ?
G'day James,
We've had mixed comments from customers who roll up their super chunky swag sleeping bags with the whole swag bundle.
It seems the original bag will be ok, but some customers prefer to upgrade to the larger 1100 bag. I think it just comes down to individual strength and how particular you are when rolling up the swag.
The short answer is, yes it can.
Does the external length dimension include the hood, or is it just for the bag part?
G'day Derek,
Yes, the external length dimensions include the hood.
The maximum user height is 220cm, so anyone around that height or shorter will be comfortable in this bag.
I am wondering whether the series 1 & 2 zips are compatible to join them together?
G'day Jack,
I've just spoken to Oztent on this one, and the zip hardware hasn't changed.
You'll have no issue zipping a Series 1 or 2 bag together.
Would this sleeping bag fit OK inside the RS-1 swag?
G'day Brett,
Yes, the Rivergum XL is an excellent sleeping bag to use inside the RS-1 Swag.
What does it mean where it says “ Inner fleece liner can be removed to become a summer bag”
G'day David,
This is such a versatile sleeping bag for all seasons! The inner fleece liner, which is used to provide extra warmth in cold conditions can be removed to either be washed - so you don't have to wash the whole sleeping bag or you can use it on its own as a sleeping bag for warmer weather - separate from the main sleeping bag. I hope this makes sense!
I want to use in a caravan as bedding for touring in southern Australia
G'day Bob,
The hood on the Oztent Rivergum XL isn't removable, so sorry if that doesn't work for your plans. If you're looking for an option without a hood that you can use on a double bed maybe check out the Roman Camper Double 400, Coleman Big Game, or Coleman Pilbara C-5.
How does the Rivergum XL compare to the Darche Cold Mountain Canvas 900? Specs & price seem similar, how about quality?
G'day Luke,
Thank you for getting in touch, the Darche Cold Mountain Canvas 900 and the Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag are both pretty similar, the temperature rating, and size are fairly similar. The main differences being the Rivergum is slightly wider at 100cm and it has a zip out fleece liner. The Cold Mountain is 90cm and has a flannel inner liner (not a zip out one), it also has dual zippers so you can stick your feet out of either side! We think both are a great option, and both have great reviews online.
When you specify left or right zip, does it refer to when you're looking at the bag, or when you're actually in it? Cheers
G'day Matt,
Great question, the zipper is based on the side while lying in the bag on your back. For example, the left-hand zipper will be on your left-hand side if you're in the sleeping bag on your back.
I wanted to know where the bag is made? In Australia? I have the same question about the Oz trail cotton canvas mega sleeping bag. Just trying to keep Aus made in mind while shopping :)
We don't have any Australian made sleeping bags sorry, Zoe, they are all made overseas, predominantly in China. Unfortunately, any product made in Australia comes with a much higher price tag... something we as consumers have an aversion to.
What is the best way to store the bag?
G'day Aaron,
The Oztent Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag comes with a storage bag so you can store it directly in that. Alternately you may wish to store it loosely stuffed into a large pillow case or similar to allow the fibres to stay open and not be compacted.
Will the XL bag zip together with the standard size rivergum bag? We already have one of the discontinued standard size bags. It seems like the length is the same on each (235 cm) and just the width varies from 85 to 100cm, so hoping they are ompatible for zipping?
G'day Mike,
You're right in your assumption there, you can connect your Oztent Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag with the standard sized one, just make sure you get ones with zips on the opposite sides.
How does this compare against Blackwolf Tuff All season
G'day Joe,
There are a couple of key differences between the Oztent Rivergum XL Sleeping Bag and the Black Wolf Tuff All Season King Sleeping Bag. The Black Wolf is bigger when in use but also packs down larger as well, it also comes with a lifetime warranty compared to the Rivergum's 12-month warranty. The Rivergum will stand up better in the colder temperatures but is a little heavier because of that.
The zips are way better on the Rivergum. The Rivergum outer is much better in terms of wear.
Can this bag be opened completely like a quilt/blanket??
G'day Richard,
I've jusy been down to the shop floor to double check this and yes, the Oz Tent Rivergum can be opened up completely like a blanket.
Is it from the in side of the sleeping bag or from looking at it
G'day Ryan,
I've just checked this for you, and the zipper location is determined by the side of your body the zipper is on if you're inside the bag lying on your back.
Do these come in smaller sizes? It seems like all these bags are huge. I love this bag but am worried it will be too big.
Hi, Are these machine washable?
There appears to be only 1 option.
2/7/19 Update - Just a heads up, we now have the option to select this from the drop down menu when you add it to the bag.
Hi, Can two of these be zipped together? or do they fully unzip to form a blanket? are they waterproof or repellent? Cheers Pat
