For the lone wolf who likes to explore off the beaten track, the newly updated Mantis UL 1 from Black Wolf is a low-profile, easy to use hiking and backpacking tent that will shelter you in all kinds of conditions. Now even lighter and pack-friendly then before, the new model shaves 25-30% of weight off the original.

When you’re faced with Mother Nature’s finest gusty conditions, the last thing you want is to be in is a tall, protruding shelter that’ll rattle in the wind. The Mantis has a low-profile structure which will help keep your shelter steady when conditions aren’t ideal. For protection against rain, the nylon fly has a waterhead rating of 2000mm and has taped seams to keep water out. In warmer conditions, you’ll have plenty of airflow that’ll come through the No-see-um mesh head and foot vents plus you'll have the added insect protection.

You can keep your pack and boots outside of your clean shelter, as this tent has enough space under the vestibule to store your gear. There are also internal pockets to keep important items like your phone or PLB at arm’s reach once you’re all settled in. For a reliable low-profile tent that’ll shelter you after a rugged day on the track, you can’t go past the Mantis 1 UL tent from Black Wolf.

  • Single door and vestibule
  • 25-30% lighter than the original model
  • New lightweight cord lock leg points
  • No-see-um mesh on doors and windows
  • Waterproof taped seams on floor

Small and light with plenty of room for 1

I normally sleep in a dutch bivvy with a tarp but wanted something with room. I wanted something else for motorbike adventure riding. The packed size is small and it is very light. Easy to set up and pack. Has plenty of room to move around in and also store your gear inside of. I have a few Black Wolf products and the quality is very good. I would recommend this product. Snowys service was excellent as always and item delivered to Victoria in 1 day. As usual Snowys prices are always the lowest and altough you could matchbthem in the stores if you ask, I will always give my business to Snowys as the provide the best deals inbthe first instance.

Sleek and practical fantastic design for windy conditions

Well built and so easy to erect and pack away, the ideal tent when you're on the go. Across the various brands it represent excellent value for money.
I am cyclotouring and I really like the packed size as I can fit it inside a pannier rather than on top of the luggage rack.
One inconvenience is the inner height as it is impossible for an adult sized person to sit up.
Would I purchase it again Yes but in 2 persons size as the weight difference and packed size are negligible.

Freestanding?1 answer

If used without the fly, is this tent able to be used without pegs? I will be needing to erect on a platform with no tiedown points or holes for pegs etc. If not can you recommend a 1 person tent or bivy that can?

- Landsdale(3 months ago)

G'day Craig,

You won't be able to use the Mantis UL I freestanding, unfortunately, but your best option for a one person freestanding hiking tent would be the Tungsten 1P (which is probably the best all-rounder, the Tungsten UL 1 or the Hubba NX from MSR (which is on the pricey side). I hope this was helpful Craig, if you have any other questions feel free to let us know!

Weight of poles1 answer

What is the combined weight of the two poles?

- 2480(5 months ago)

G'day Michael,

I just weighed the two poles of the Black Wolf Mantis UL I Hiking Tent for you. Together, they weighed 266g. Keep in mind that it might be a few grams lighter as the poles did still have the rubber bands on them to keep them together.

Internal length1 answer

I am 183cm tall and it looks like the ends of the tent taper down. Would I be able to lie down without my head and feet pushing against the fly and getting wet when it rains?

- Perth(7 months ago)

G'day Dave,

I've just had a quick look at the Black Wolf Mantis UL I Hiking Tent on our shop floor and I reckon that whilst it will be a bit tight, you should be able to lay down in the tent without your feet or head touching the ends.

How much room is there under the side vestibule?1 answer

Would I be able to store a 55L backpack and some boots in the side area of this tent under the vestibule? I get the impression that there isn't enough room to store gear inside the tent so my major concern is having a place to store my gear out of the rain/dew...

- Brisbane(8 months ago)

G'day Jay,

You will fit a 55L backpack in the vestible, however it will probably touch up against the fly sheet so it might be a good idea to leave the rain cover on the pack just to give it a bit of extra protection in wet conditions. Your boots will fit off to one side no worries.

Support at foot of tent1 answer

Hi there, I have heard of issues with sagging near the foot of the tent in earlier models of the Mantis, regardless of how well you pitch it. How is this model different in that way? Thanks 😀

- Childers, Qld(1 year ago)

Hi Freya,

I'm not sure if the reviews you've read relate to older versions of this tent or not but the foot of the tent has a pole section to keep the inner erect however if this is not fully guyed out it may not achieve its optimal height, which is actually quite low, therefore this might be an issue if you are a taller person or have long feet and sleep on your back.

As we haven't had any feedback in relation to this I can't specifically comment as the tents in store seem to be fine however, from the reviews I've read, it seems that to avoid any problems the optimal height for someone using this tent is 170cm.

How many poles?1 answer

Does the foot end have a pole too? What is stopping it from sagging onto your feet?

- Bundaberg(1 year ago)

G'day Jen,

I can see where you would be concerned as if the inner was touching your feet - there'd be a lot of annoying condensation!

Yes there is definitely a pole at the end of this tent to keep the inner elevated off your feet (I double checked with the display model).

You can get a good idea of what this looks like in the second image linked on the product page, which shows the Mantis UL I without the fly on.

Head height1 answer

Is it possible to sit up in this tent? for changing?

- Vic(1 year ago)

G'day Sooz,

The maximum internal height of the Mantis UL I Hiking Tent from Black Wolf is 70cm. I'm 5"6 and I wouldn't be able to sit up inside comfortably. You may be able to depending on your height - but it is quite a cosy tent, so it's probably not optimised for getting changed in.

Is the other side of the tent mesh or a solid material?1 answer

The old model had a door on each side but this new model only specifies one door. Is the other side mesh or solid material?

- Gisborne(1 year ago)

G'day Matt,

I've given Black Wolf a call and they've confirmed that the door on this tent is mesh, and the other side has a mesh panel at the top, with a solid panel at the bottom.

Do the mantis come with light pegs?1 answer

Do the mantis come with light pegs? Or would I be better off buying some sea to summit ground control pegs? I am trying to go ultralight but not ultra expensive.

- Morphett Vale(1 year ago)

The pegs are regular 'hook' style pegs, but they are lightweight alloy, I tried to attach a photo for you but we are having upload issues in our store at the moment sorry. The ground control pegs will be stronger and more packable, but not necessarily lighter.
