A large right-threaded hand wheel is more intuitive to connect and easier to tighten. The all-too-important thermal protection built in to the fitting cuts off the flow of gas in the even of a fire. Another safety feature is the back valve check, which disallows the flow of gas if the hand wheel is not fully tightened.
